If you live in an older home and find yourself calling a drain cleaning service once every year or two, try this tip: once a week, put cup of rock salt in one of your toilets last thing at night. Flush the toilet so the rock salt goes down the line. It will get caught in the roots that are growing in your main line. Roots don’t like salt and will stop growing. This only works for main lines. It also works best if the line has been cleaned out recently. Previously, I had my main line cleaned professionally once a year. Since I have been flushing rock salt in my drains, I have not had to have my main line cleaned for 6 years. I am curious as to how long it will be until I have to have my main line cleaned out again.
